Newberry Housing Authority Awarded HUD-VASH Vouchers to Serve Local Veterans

NEWBERRY, S.C. - June 25, 2026 - The Newberry Housing Authority (NHA) is proud to announce that it has been awarded five (5) HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the 2025 Registration of Interest for HUD-VASH Vouchers.

The award includes $43,492 in budget authority and will enable the Newberry Housing Authority, in partnership with the Columbia Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), to provide permanent housing assistance and supportive services to eligible veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The HUD-VASH program combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance from HUD with case management and supportive services provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The program is designed to help veterans secure stable housing while accessing the resources needed to achieve long-term housing success.

"We are honored to receive this award and grateful for the opportunity to further serve the men and women who have served our country," said Jessica Holcomb, Executive Director of the Newberry Housing Authority. "These vouchers will provide critical housing stability for veterans in our community and strengthen our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every resident has access to safe, decent, and affordable housing."

The award becomes effective August 1, 2026, and the vouchers will be administered in accordance with HUD-VASH program requirements and in collaboration with the Columbia VA Medical Center.

The Newberry Housing Authority recognizes that affordable housing is a key component of veteran well-being and remains committed to working with federal, state, and local partners to expand housing opportunities throughout Newberry County.

How Veterans Can Access HUD-VASH Assistance

Veterans interested in learning more about HUD-VASH assistance or determining eligibility should contact the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina, or speak with their VA social worker or case manager. Referrals to the HUD-VASH program are coordinated through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Newberry Housing Authority, established in 1968, provides housing assistance for people with low and moderate incomes and the elderly through 315 Public Housing units and manages 279 Section 8 Vouchers for area landlords. Newberry Housing Authority participates in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV), Mainstream, Public Housing, and the SC Housing HOME Programs, and is governed by seven (7) Board of Commissioners.

NHA offices are open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
