Nature of Work

The Deputy Executive Director of the Sumter Housing Authority is responsible for the day-to-day operations and activities of the Authority's Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Programs. Advising the Executive Director on policy formulation and developing programs to carry out these policies; providing input into the preparation of the strategic and five-year plans including capital funding initiatives and annual operating budgets; ensuring payments, accounts payable and accounts receivable are made accurately and timely; and directing the coordination of all staffing and human resource activities are all responsibilities of the role. The Deputy Executive Director also has significant visibility both in the organization and in the community, where the role interacts and transacts business with community partners, local officials, HUD representatives, landlords, employees, developers, contractor and vendors, the Board of Commissioners and other stakeholders. The Deputy Executive Director is second in command reporting to the Executive Director and must have thorough knowledge of the regulations governing Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs and procedures, thorough knowledge of the financial rules and regulations governing housing and social services program operations including available funding mechanisms.


Necessary Requirements of Work

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Public/Business administration, Political Science, Social Services or closely related field supplemented with additional course work in business or public administration is required.
  • Experience:  Five or more years of experience working in leadership with an organization that provides affordable housing and the ability to work outside normal business hours to participate in community events and address emergency property management situations
  • /or supportive services. Three to Five years of experience managing a team is required. 
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid South Carolina Driver's license while employed with the Authority.  HCVP or Public Housing Leadership certifications are preferred.
